4X4 VS AWD

AWD VS 4X4

What is the difference and which one is best for you?

All Wheel Drive (AWD)

Designed for drivers who primarily stay on established roads in all weather conditions. GM offers intelligent AWD across it's SUV and crossover lineup through models such as the Chevrolet Equinox and the GMC Terrain. This system monitors changing road conditions and reacts with the distribution of power between the front and rear wheels on demand. AWD tends to be a more user friendly feature intended for commuters and day to day drivers looking for maximum confidence on any road.

Four Wheel Drive (4X4)

Built for significant off-road use and/or heavy duty applications, 4X4 offers a robust driveline build. GM offers a 2 speed transfer-case allowing for a low-range giving more torque for sticky situations, high range for on road or light conditions as well as Auto 4X4 to give similar on-demand benefits as AWD. Found on our pickup trucks such as the Silverado or the Canyon, as well as large SUV's like the Tahoe or Suburban. The axle differentials in a 4X4 system cause power to be sent to the wheels with the least amount of traction. This is corrected by use of auto-locking differentials (such as the G80 found in fullsize pickups) or Electronic locking differentials found in models like the AT4X or the ZR2. This equalizes the distribution of power and allows you to get out of more situations. The heavier construction makes 4X4 the primary choice for work vehicles, off-road use, or vehicles pulling heavy loads.

How To Choose

When selecting the best driveline for you, it's important to consider key questions such as; Will you be using this in a work capacity such as farm, construction, etc? 4X4 will be the perfect answer for you, with its robust design and ability to handle heavier work loads. Are you simply looking for a boost in your confidence on typical established roads? If so AWD will perform far superior with enhanced on-road traction benefits, without increased fuel consumption as well as availability on smaller chassis. By assessing what you ultimately are hoping to gain out of your vehicle it becomes much easier to narrow down which drive system will be best suited to giving you the confidence you need. 4X4 typically offers a superior system in extreme and rugged conditions, but can be more than many people need in their day to day life.
